Circular vibrating screen and linear vibrating screen are two mainstream screening equipment widely used in quartz sand classification circuits. They differ in vibration trajectory, working principle, structural design, processing capacity, classification accuracy, applicable materials and operating parameters. This article is prepared for quartz-mill.com.
1. Working Principle & Vibration Trajectory
Circular vibrating screen
It uses one eccentric vibration motor or eccentric shaft exciter. The movement track of material on the screen deck is circular or elliptical.
- The eccentric block rotates to generate centrifugal force, driving the whole screen box to make circular vibration.
- Material bounces forward along the inclined screen surface under circular motion.
Linear vibrating screen
Adopts two synchronous counter-rotating vibration motors. The horizontal component of vibration force cancels out, and vertical component superimposes. Material moves in a straight-line jumping trajectory.
- Vibration force is at a 45° angle to the screen deck.
- Material marches linearly forward while jumping.
2. Key Parameter Comparison
| Item | Circular Vibrating Screen | Linear Vibrating Screen |
|---|---|---|
| Vibration track | Circular / elliptical | Straight line |
| Screen deck inclination | 15° ~ 20° | 0° ~ 5° (near horizontal) |
| Vibration amplitude | 3–5 mm | 2–4 mm |
| Vibration frequency | ~960 rpm | ~1450 rpm |
| Material movement | Fast sliding + jumping | Slow uniform jumping |
| Throughput | Higher | Lower |
| Classification precision | Medium | High |
| Anti-blinding performance | Moderate | Better |
| Power consumption | Lower | Higher |
| Investment cost | Lower | Higher |
3. Advantages and Disadvantages
Circular vibrating screen
✅ Advantages
- Large handling capacity, simple structure, low maintenance cost.
- Robust frame, suitable for coarse and medium particle quartz sand.
- Low energy consumption, widely used in crushing and rod mill closed-circuit classification.
❌ Disadvantages
- Classification cut point is not sharp; a small amount of near-size particles may leak.
- Higher risk of screen blinding for wet, sticky quartz sand with high fines content.
- Not ideal for high-precision fine grading.
Linear vibrating screen
✅ Advantages
- Sharp separation accuracy, strict control of particle size band such as 0.5–1 mm quartz sand.
- Near-horizontal deck, material stays longer on screen; tapered PU panels work well to reduce blinding.
- Good adaptability for wet slurry screening.
❌ Disadvantages
- Lower processing capacity for the same screen area.
- Two vibration motors increase power consumption and maintenance workload.
- Higher purchase cost.
4. Application Matching for Quartz Sand Production
Circular vibrating screen best for:
- Closed-circuit crushing after jaw & cone crusher, coarse pre-screening.
- Large-volume mass production of quartz sand with moderate particle tolerance.
- Classify 1–5 mm quartz sand, high throughput priority.
Linear vibrating screen best for:
- High-spec products: foundry sand, filter quartz sand, engineered stone sand with strict PSD requirement, e.g. 0.5–1 mm.
- Wet classification after rod mill, high fines or slightly sticky slurry.
- Fine particle fractions, when strict cut between oversize and undersize is required.
5. Wear & Operation Notes for Abrasive Quartz
- Both types are recommended to use polyurethane tapered screen panels for quartz sand, instead of steel wire mesh, to extend service life.
- Circular screen: large inclination accelerates material flow, reduces screen wear time per ton, but uneven feeding will cause local abrasion.
- Linear screen: slower material velocity means quartz grains contact screen longer; screen panel wear rate is relatively higher under the same throughput.
6. Quick Selection Guidance
- If your priority is high output and low cost → circular vibrating screen
- If your priority is precise particle classification, strict finished sand specification → linear vibrating screen
Circular vibrating screen features circular vibration track, steep deck angle and large throughput for general quartz pre-screening and mass production. Linear vibrating screen uses dual motors for straight-line vibration, near-horizontal deck and superior classification precision, suitable for high-grade quartz sand with tight particle size requirements, such as 0.5–1 mm filter sand and foundry sand.
