Silica powder readily absorbs ambient moisture, which leads to agglomeration, reduced flowability, inconsistent particle size distribution, and degraded performance for downstream applications such as filler, ceramics, LED encapsulation and friction materials. Strict storage control is essential to keep low moisture content.
1. Warehouse Environment Control
- Relative Humidity: Maintain indoor RH below 40%, ideally 20–30%. Use industrial dehumidifiers to stabilize humidity continuously.
- Temperature: Keep storage temperature stable at 15–25°C. Avoid large temperature fluctuations, as cooling surfaces will trigger condensation.
- Ventilation: Implement controlled dry-air ventilation; never introduce humid outdoor air. Prevent water vapor infiltration from walls, floors and windows.
- Ground & Insulation: Store materials above ground level on moisture-proof pallets. Use waterproof concrete or epoxy flooring; avoid direct contact with damp ground.
2. Packaging Specifications
- Use fully sealed, multi-layer barrier bags with aluminum foil inner liner or polyethylene moisture barrier film. Ordinary woven bags are not acceptable for high-purity silica powder.
- After filling, apply heat sealing to eliminate air gaps. For ultra-fine / high-purity grades, flush the package with dry nitrogen before sealing.
- Check packaging integrity before warehousing. Reject bags with pinholes, cracks or loose seals.
3. Stacking & Handling Rules
- Stack height should be limited to prevent bag deformation and seal rupture. Maintain spacing between stacks and warehouse walls (≥30 cm) for air circulation and wall condensation avoidance.
- Separate silica powder from water sources, cleaning agents and other hygroscopic raw materials. Strictly isolate from liquid chemicals.
- Avoid opening packages prematurely. Once opened, consume the full batch quickly; if leftover, re-seal immediately with additional moisture barrier wrapping.
4. Inventory & Quality Management
- Apply first-in, first-out (FIFO) inventory rotation. Do not store silica powder for excessively long periods.
- Perform regular spot checks: test moisture content and inspect bag surface for condensation.
- Prevent mechanical damage during forklift and manual handling. Damaged packaging is the most common cause of moisture ingress.
5. Special Notes For Ultra-Fine / Zero-Iron Quartz Powder
Ultra-fine silica powder has larger specific surface area and much stronger hygroscopicity. For zero-iron quartz powder used in electronics and advanced ceramics:
- Store inside temperature & humidity controlled clean rooms.
- Nitrogen-sealed packaging is mandatory.
- Avoid frequent opening and repeated exposure to ambient air.
The core principle for silica powder storage is to cut off contact with water vapor. A combination of low-humidity warehouse, high-barrier sealed packaging, stable temperature and standardized inventory management can effectively stop moisture absorption and preserve powder quality.
