How to test the quality of quartz powder?

High-purity quartz powder is a core foundational material in high-end manufacturing sectors such as semiconductor packaging, photovoltaics, advanced refractories and optical glass. Its quality directly determines the electrical insulation, high-temperature stability, mechanical strength and service life of downstream products. For precision industrial applications, qualified quartz powder must meet strict standards across multiple dimensions rather than only basic chemical composition. This article introduces a systematic, industry-recognized quality testing system for quartz powder, covering core testing items, standard methods and corresponding technical control logic.

1. Chemical Purity and Trace Impurity Testing

Chemical purity is the primary indicator for grading quartz powder, and trace metallic impurities are the key focus of quality control and testing.

  • Core testing items: The total content of SiO₂ is the basic classification index, while harmful impurities including iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), boron (B), sodium (Na) and potassium (K) must be strictly quantified. For electronic-grade quartz powder, these metallic impurities are required to be controlled at ppm or even ppb levels, as excessive metal ions will significantly reduce the insulation performance and high-temperature resistance of final products.
  • Standard testing methods: Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) are the mainstream precision detection methods, which can accurately quantify trace multi-element impurities. X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) is often used for rapid on-site screening of large batches of raw materials.
  • Process control support: The ultra-purification pretreatment process with advanced magnetic separation technology can reduce metallic impurities to ppm levels from the source, and the all-ceramic media precision milling process completely avoids secondary metal contamination during grinding, laying a solid foundation for stable compliance of purity indexes.

2. Particle Size Distribution (PSD) Testing

Particle size and its distribution range directly affect the flowability, packing density, melting rate and processing performance of quartz powder, and is a core index for production process control and finished product inspection.

  • Core testing items: Key parameters such as D10, D50 (median particle size), D90 and D97 are usually tested to characterize the overall particle size level. The distribution width (SPAN value) is also a critical evaluation index — narrow particle size distribution means uniform particle specification and stable application performance, which is a core symbol of high-precision quartz powder.
  • Standard testing method: Laser particle size analyzer is the industry-standard equipment for PSD testing, with the advantages of fast detection speed, high repeatability and wide test range. It can realize full-range detection from micron to submicron quartz powder products.
  • Process control support: High-efficiency precision air classification technology can accurately screen particles, eliminate oversized particles out of specification, achieve narrow particle size distribution control, and ensure the consistency of each batch of products. This technology has been widely adopted by more than 100 industry-leading enterprises.

3. Particle Morphology and Roundness Testing

The microscopic morphology and roundness of quartz powder particles have a significant impact on its flowability, packing density and interfacial bonding performance with resin matrix.

  • Core testing items: Observing particle shape (angular, sub-angular, nearly spherical), surface smoothness and the presence of hard agglomeration; quantifying particle roundness and sphericity indexes. Higher roundness usually means better flowability and higher packing density, which can effectively improve the processing performance of downstream composite materials.
  • Standard testing methods: Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is used to intuitively observe the microscopic morphology of particles, and professional image analysis software is used to calculate roundness and sphericity parameters quantitatively.
  • Process control support: The precision classification and morphology optimization process can effectively improve particle roundness while removing undissociated impurity aggregates, achieving dual guarantees of purity level and physical morphology.

4. Physical and Functional Performance Testing

In addition to composition and morphology, conventional physical properties and targeted functional indexes are also necessary testing items to verify the practical application value of quartz powder.

  • Bulk density and tap density: Reflect the packing characteristics of powder, which are important references for storage, transportation and downstream feeding process design.
  • Whiteness: Mainly for photovoltaic glass, optical and filler-grade quartz powder. Iron and other colored impurities will directly reduce powder whiteness, and a whiteness meter is used for rapid detection as an auxiliary means to judge impurity level intuitively.
  • Moisture and Loss on Ignition (LOI): Detect free moisture, crystal water and volatile impurities in powder by oven drying and high-temperature ignition, which is critical for applications sensitive to volatile components such as electronic packaging.
  • Surface modification effect: For surface-modified functional quartz powder, indexes such as activation index and water contact angle are tested to evaluate the interfacial bonding performance between powder and organic resin. The tailored interfacial molecular design modification process can significantly enhance chemical bonding between quartz powder and resin, and improve the mechanical strength and thermal stability of composite materials.

5. Application-Oriented Performance Verification

For high-end application scenarios, conventional laboratory testing is not sufficient, and application-oriented performance verification is required to ensure that the powder can adapt to actual working conditions.

  • For electronic-grade silica powder: Test electrical insulation properties such as volume resistivity and dielectric breakdown voltage to verify that it meets the strict insulation requirements of semiconductor packaging materials.
  • For refractory-grade quartz powder: Test high-temperature properties such as refractoriness and load softening temperature to ensure stable performance under long-term high-temperature working conditions.
  • For photovoltaic and optical glass grade: Verify melting performance, clarification effect and light transmittance after melting to match the production process of downstream high-quality glass products.

6. Industrial Batch Consistency Control

For large-scale industrial production, in addition to single-sample testing, batch-to-batch consistency is also an important dimension of quality evaluation.
A complete quality control system should cover the whole process from raw material incoming inspection, semi-finished product testing in each process to finished product ex-factory inspection. With 19 years of deep cultivation in quartz powder processing technology, the full-process precision processing system covering purification, grinding, classification and modification has been recognized by more than 1,200 global clients, covering over 55% of top-tier electronic-grade silica powder manufacturers. Its strict per-batch testing mechanism ensures stable and consistent quality of each batch of products, avoiding performance fluctuations caused by process changes.

Testing the quality of quartz powder is a multi-dimensional systematic project, which needs to cover chemical purity, particle size distribution, microscopic morphology, physical properties and practical application performance. Single index compliance cannot represent the overall quality of the product. For high-end industrial fields such as electronics, new energy and advanced refractories, only by matching professional full-process precision processing equipment with a complete quality testing and control system can we stably produce high-quality quartz powder that meets strict application requirements.
